Introducing Therapy Dogs in Schools: Foundations, Governance and Best Practice
Full-Day Professional Learning Workshop
Thinking about introducing a therapy dog into your school?
This full-day online workshop provides an evidence-informed introduction to the safe, ethical and effective implementation of therapy dogs in educational settings.
Designed for schools exploring or in the early stages of program development, the workshop moves beyond enthusiasm and into practical decision-making. Participants will gain a clear understanding of the governance, risk management, operational and animal welfare considerations required to establish a program with integrity.
Participants will explore:
Core Animal-Assisted Services terminology
Current industry guidelines and emerging standards
Best practice approaches for schools
Risk-aware planning and implementation
Animal welfare and handler responsibilities
Organisational readiness and role clarity
Professional standards, training pathways and future development
By the end of the workshop, participants will:
Understand the foundations of a well-designed therapy dog program
Identify key risks and implementation considerations
Evaluate their school's readiness for a program
Feel more confident in determining appropriate next steps
This interactive workshop includes opportunities for questions, discussion and reflection throughout the day, allowing participants to apply learning to their own school context.
The focus is not simply on introducing a dog into a school—but on doing so responsibly, strategically and sustainably.
